Oliphant Lake, Chester, SC

Next car ride adventure was to Oliphant Lake and Landsford Canal State Park. Both located in South Carolina. Yet in this piece I will be only speaking of Oliphant Lake. See the next entry for Landsford Canal State Park.

Oliphant Lake is located in Chester, South Carolina just off Highway 190. For me, I don't just like to rush to my destinations. I don't take the freeway or highway much because I like to see the missed sights. Oliphant Lake was just over an hour drive for me. Stopping here and there to take photos of the scenery and plant life.

Oliphant Lake is 40 acres of land and water. It is not owned by the State of South Carolina  but is leased to South Carolina via a private sector. Yet even though the lake being owned privately it is open free to the public.  There are no public bathrooms.

On the 40 acres are two lakes full of largemouth bass, bluegill, shell cracker and catfish for fishing from a pier and has a boat ramp as well.(The lake was closed in 2015 for renovation and restocking of fish) The pier is wheelchair accessible and also is a short walk for those who have problems with walking.

The lake is open only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 30 minutes before official sunrise to 30 minutes after official sunset. (For those who love both views of the sunrise and sunset over a lake.)

see http://www.dnr.sc.gov/lakes/state/oliphant/index.html  for more information.

Besides fish there are squirrels, rabbits and dragonflies. I have not seen larger game there but I am sure they have been seen by locals.

This is the walkway to the pier. It is a good size and is designed in a letter "T" so you can view both sides of the waterway and fish from all sides.

One of the views I got from the right side of the pier.

These are all photographs of the right side -- standing in front of the lake.

If you expand the picture you will see there is another bridge or walkway far south. That goes over some water and you can fish from there too.

Straight down the center of lake from the view of the pier. I can't wait to go back when the leaves change to other colors.

This view is right next to the pier. Along the waterline is where I took the photo of the dragonflies.

This was my view walking towards the lake, in the grassy area.

The sight after the water and land blur.

Tree line leading up to the center photo of the lake.

The only thing I recommend if you are going to stay extended periods of time is bug spray. I got bitten by some gnats and two mosquitoes.

So if you have any questions please ask here or on maps through google. I am a local guide. So just ask.

So until next time.

This is a ginger walking.  Hoping for daisy finds.

Mary
